How to wear a tiara

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

You tend to only wear a tiara once, on your wedding day, so you may be unsure of how to wear a wedding tiara.  This blog post will give you a basic idea of where wedding tiaras can be placed but if you have a hairdresser who will be doing your hair on your wedding day, make sure you consult with them as they may be able to give more advice specific to your particular hair style.

There are numerous places you can position your wedding tiara, no particular position is better than others. It does come down to personal preference and your wedding hair style. Below are the common places where brides tend to place their tiaras, you can use this a starting point.

Wearing your tiara at the front of the head

If you’ve got a fringe your wedding tiara can look excellent placed on the parting of your fringe and the rest of your hair meet.  This looks even better if you plan to backcomb the hair at the top of your head to add height as the tiara will act as a frame and a focal point.

Wearing your tiara on the top the head

Placing your tiara further back on your head is perfect for a bride whose bridal hairstyle keeps the hair at the front of the head quite flat and close to the scalp.  Most people see this as a traditional place to add a tiara.  You may find that you need to bend the tiara band ends around the back of your head to prevent them from sticking out; as long as the band is flexible enough you should easily be able to do this a small amount of pressure and secure into place with grips.

Wearing your tiara at the back of the head

When it was suggested to my for my own wedding that I should wear a tiara around the back of my head, I thought it a little odd until it was pointed out that my wedding guests would be looking at the back of me for the entire ceremony.  I know from working with brides that a small number have worn their wedding tiara at the back of the heads and added some more decoration around the front with pearl or crystal pins.

Using your tiara as a bun wrap

Some tiaras especially those with flexible bands are suitable to be worn as bun wraps.   If you’re choosing a tiara for this purpose make sure you pick one with a thin wire base, preferably handmade as these can be bent into shape without much resistance.  Then they just need pinning into place with grips.

Wearing a tiara with your hair down

If you’re planning on wearing your hair down on your wedding day, it’s probably best to place your tiara towards the front of your head to ensure the ends of the band don’t stick out.  Tiaras aren’t worn like a headband so the easiest way to make sure you’ve got it at the right angle is to sit it on top of your head and push the ends of the band down slightly. This should allow the wedding tiara to tilt backwards at a tiny angle and will allow you to secure it will grips underneath the top layer of hair if needed.

I hope this article has helped in your dilemma on where to place your wedding tiara, but if you need more advice feel free to contact me through the Wedding And Gems shop.

A Tiara or no Tiara – An Interesting Question

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Tiaras were a status symbol in times gone by, often worn at official functions by queens and princesses.  They are still technically a status symbol today, as a wedding tiara signifies the most important person in the room – the bride. Wedding Guests and any onlookers have no doubt who the bride is (or who are the bridesmaids if they are wearing tiaras) especially if they aren’t in formal wedding attire. If you’re not having a traditional wedding dress, definitely opt for a wedding tiara as it will ensure that you can be seen as the bride in a crowded room and are the always centre of attention.

If you’re having a veil, grab a tiara as it hides the veil comb well.  Also if you were planning on removing your veil when it came to the wedding breakfast (just so it doesn’t getting in the way of eating), you’ll still have some decoration in your hair.  If this was your intention, ensure you don’t buy tiaras which have veils attached.  You might think it might make things a little easier when you’re getting ready, but if you buy a combined veil and tiara, not only will you have limited flexibility on how to wear your veil and tiara but once you have to remove your wedding veil to eat, the tiara has to come of too.

The reason I decided that I wanted to wear a wedding tiara instead of any alternatives is that it does have an effect of making you feel special. A lot of brides have a childhood dream and have imagined themselves as a princesses, a tiara helps you to act out that fantasy on one of the biggest days of your life.

4 Reasons why you should wear a wedding tiara:

  1. It really does make you feel special
  2. It marks you out as one of the most important people in the room
  3. If your wedding dress isn’t easily visible for example sitting down to eat or close up photography you’ll still look like a bride
  4. A wedding tiara will compliment veil if you choose to wear one by hiding the veils attachment method.

If you’re undecided on whether you want to wear a tiara on your wedding day, ask yourself this question?   “When I imagined my own wedding when I was a child, what was my tiara like?” If you can clearly remember what your tiara looked like in your child like wedding fantasies then in your heart you want to have the chance of wearing a wedding tiara. As you only usually get to wear a tiara once, make sure you don’t regret losing the chance to wear one, don’t dismiss your childhood fantasies as silly or important

Tomorrow’s Wedding Fair

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Tomorrow Wedding And Gems will be showcasing some of their most popular products at the Samlesbury Hall Wedding Fair in Lancashire.  I will be there to offer advice to yourself as brides-to-be and answer any queries you might have about bridal accessories in general.

I’m currently in the middle of getting everything organised for tomorrow, the leaflets are almost done, my new business cards have arrived and my wedding tiaras, hair accessories and jewellery are safely packed away for the short car journey tomorrow.

As always I get a little excited when doing wedding fairs, it gives me a chance to meet my customers.  I often don’t get to meet you, but I do enjoy getting to know you through email and having a sneak peak at your wedding plans.  I got married 2 years ago, so even though all the excitement of planning a wedding is over for me, I still enjoy sharing these moments with my customers, so it will be good to meet you.

My first wedding fair was at Blackpool a few years ago and I remember a particular customer in particular, Jane, she was extremely bubbly, and was planning to wear a elegantly cut smooth silk wedding dress, we had a long discussion about the perfect tiara and jewellery for her and as a result the Crystal Bridal Tiara 002 was born.  In fact that’s her tiara, the one shown the page.

What really excites me about tomorrow is that I know at least one of you will be that extraordinary that you will bring a smile to my face for years to come, just like Jane.  So join us at tomorrows wedding fair, come meet  Emma as well, she’s going to be around if you need any more advice.

Tiara Advice

I’m often asked what brides need to look for when choosing their wedding tiara and my answer is always to ask more questions, what is your wedding dress like?  How are you planning on wearing your hair? Are you wearing a veil?  The questions don’t stop there either.  It’s difficult for me to judge which tiara would look perfect with a wedding dress and compliment the brides style without even seeing her or the dress, but I’m always happy to offer advice.   I think it’s important for a bride to look and feel her best on her wedding day so I’ve created a tiara guide.

The guide offers advice on choosing the perfect wedding tiara for you.  It’s also free.  If you’ve been over to the main site then you’ll know that I don’t believe in charging a fortune for my tiaras, simply because weddings are expensive and I have no inclination to add to that cost unnecessarily.

Perfect Tiaras for Short Hair

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Many brides grow their hair for their wedding as it gives them a few more options for their bridal hairstyle. However if you are happy with you short hair here are a few tips for selecting a wedding tiara that is perfect for you.

If you’re a bride with short hair, opt for a tiara headband instead of a traditional tiara, at Wedding and Gems we have a number of wedding tiaras which can be worn as a headband, and if we’ve not got what your looking for, contact us and we’ll get our tiara designer Kerrie G to create something for you.

If you do want to wear a more traditional tiara then choose one of our flexible tiaras which have a hand crafted base with looped ends for added security.  Also the band is very thin so you can add extra grips along the tiara band if needed.

Keep your tiara short and light weight.  This will help stop the tiara from slipping about in short hair.  A large wedding tiara paired with very short bridal hair will look unbalanced.

Choose an alternative to a wedding tiara such as hair vines, bridal pins or grips.

Below are some of our best selling wedding tiaras for short bridal hair styles.
