Wedding Hair Pins or Wedding Hair Grips

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

You may have noticed at Wedding And Gems that many of my hair pins/grips designs are available both an a hair grip and a hair pin.  If you’re unsure of the difference a hair grip, is a shorter grip, with 2 prongs which are close together and is primary used to hold small bits of hair in place, such as the wispy bits of hair at the base of your neck which aren’t long enough to be tied into a high pony tail, or for pining your fringe back if you’re growing it out like me.  Hair pins (shown in the picture) are longer and they have 2 prongs which are separated this allows them to be used for bigger pieces of hair and they help maintain the structure of the hair style.  For example if you were trying to create a bun you would use hair pins to keep the bun in place after you’d twisted the hair.  If you tried to use hair grips you would stretch them out of shape and they probably won’t hold the style so well and since you’ve warped them out of shape you wouldn’t be able to reuse them.

So should you be buying wedding hair pins or wedding hair grips?

Well it does depend on the hair style you’re planning on having on your wedding day. If like many other brides you’re planning on wearing your hair half up and half down, then you’ll probably need hair grips.  But if you and your hairdresser are planning on creating an intricate up do then choose a combination of both.  The wedding hair pins will be used to help keep the structure of the style and the wedding hair grips can be added after the structure is secure for added decoration.

How many wedding hair pins / grips will I need?

The amount of wedding hair grips or pins you’ll need is dependent on the look you’re trying to achieve.  If you’re only planning on wearing hair pins and you’ve chosen a small design then you will need quite a few of these to make an impact.  If you’re wearing them in a cluster, with another bridal hair accessory such as a wedding tiara or bridal hair vine then you can get away with wearing less.

Our Favourite Wedding Headbands

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

The collection of wedding headbands available at Wedding And Gems have been growing steadily this year, so I thought I’d talk about some of my favourite designs.

I thought I’d start with one of the best selling headbands which is the Crystal Dream Wedding Headband.  It’s full of sparkle because it is created with Swarovski and Czech crystals to keep the cost manageable for the everyday bride.  This headband is created with mostly clear crystal with a smattering of Clear AB crystals which enhance the sparkle.

If you were looking for something which included pearl then the Crystal and Pearl Wedding Headband is a great and popular choice.  It’s created with ivory fresh water pearls and clear Swarovski crystals in 2 different sizes creating sparkle amongst the lustre of the pearls.

If you wanted a more delicate pearl and crystal headband then the Jasmine Wedding Headband could be the right choice for you.  It was created as part of our Jasmine Bridal range and is the smaller sister of the Jasmine Double Band Wedding Tiara which as a double headband.

A wedding headband with a focal point to the side, like the Crystal Tiara 012 offers the bride extra detail but the ease of wearing a headband.  This headband has Swarovski crystal sprigs shooting from the side with a headband of silver seed beads and Swarovski crystals.

If your favourite headband isn’t shown here, then click over to our wedding headbands and let me know which one you prefer in the  comments section below.

As usual if you want a headband created just for you, you can always contact me and ask me to create a bespoke wedding headband to meet your budget.

Bridal Hair Accessories for Beach Weddings

Monday, November 8th, 2010

If you’re planning on getting married on a golden sandy beach under a cloudless blue sky and warm sun then you probably aren’t the type of woman who wanted a big white traditional wedding in a church with a huge white dress, train and veil.  You might not even be the type to wear a wedding tiara, but prefer something more causal or low key.  So what are your options for decorating your hair at your beach wedding?

side tiarasIf you’re wearing your hair down, then a side tiara or wedding headband might be the easiest option.  They’re simple to wear and can easily be slipped into place without the need for a hair dresser or a friend to help you.  If you’re not a headband kind of girl and to be honest I don’t feel like any type of headband suits me then you might want to choose something else.

A lot of brides wear their hair half up and half down which gives them plenty of options for decorating their wedding hair.  The first thing that springs to mind is a wedding comb which can be worn to the side or the back of the hair, again these are pretty easy to place but you might need to have a few practice sessions just to make sure that you can slide it into your hair at the right angle and make sure it stays were it’s supposed too.

If you don’t fancy the weight of a bridal comb them you could always choose grips.  These could be made from crystals, pearls or diamante and be as simple or as detailed as you like.  They don’t need to be functional, so if you’ve used other things to keep your hair in place you can just slide them in to your hair where you want them.  After a headband these are probably the easiest bridal hair accessory to place.  You can get most wedding hair grips designs on hair pins.  These are the longer 2 pronged pins which hold buns and other chunky hair styles in place.  If you’re used to styling your hair with regular hair pins then you shouldn’t have any problems using these.

wedding hair vinesBridal hairvines are becoming more popular for beach weddings, this is because of their range of uses and the causal style.  You can read more about hairvines and how they can be used by reading this previous blog post – Bridal Hair Vines. Depending on how you’re planning on wearing your hairvine you may need a friend on hairdresser to style your hair properly, but if you’re using a short hairvine just to highlight the parting of your hair or follow the sweep of your fringe you shouldn’t have a problem securing it yourself with a few hair grips.

Of course if you want to there’s nothing stopping you from wearing a wedding tiara at your beach wedding, but I find many brides prefer a more casual look.

Bridal Hair Accessories – Your Options

Friday, September 10th, 2010

There are a number of options when you choose your bridal hair accessories, so you might be finding it difficult to decide exactly what you want to wear in your hair.  So I’m going to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of certain bridal hair accessories.

Bridal Tiaras

Everyone knows what a tiara looks like and you’ll find hundreds of thousands to choose from by using the search function in Google.  When you think of accessories for wedding dress chances are a tiara is at the top of your list.  One of the main advantages of choosing a tiara as your bridal hair accessory is the vast choice, however some brides feel that a tiara isn’t right for them and prefer an alternative.  Also unlike some of the other bridal hair accessories you won’t really get the chance to wear your wedding tiara again after the big day.

Bridal Hair Pins

Hair pins make great bridal hair accessories; they come in a range of styles from simple solitary Swarovski crystals on a pin or grip to intricate patterns of crystals and pearls.  An advantage of hair pins or grips is that they help hold the structure of your bridal hair style, plus they can be worn again.  The disadvantage is that you will need to wear your hair up to make use of them and often this will require you having a hair dresser who is able to do your hair on the day.

Bridal Headbands

The range of bridal headbands is growing everyday as more and more brides are opting for this easy to wear bridal hair accessory.  Their main advantage is that they work with hair being pinned up or left loose and can easily be slipped on to the head.  But if you’re looking for your bridal hair accessories to make a huge impact then a simple headband might not be for you.

Bridal Side Tiaras

There is a growing trend for side tiaras, mainly because they offer the ease of a hair band for placement but offer the focal point of a large hair pin without the need to have your hair tied up.  The only disadvantage I can think of for this type of bridal hair accessory is that if you want a focal point at the front of your head, a side tiara isn’t for you.

Bridal Hair Vines

These bridal hair accessories are great if you want a more relaxed and romantic look.  Hair vines come in a range of sizes, widths and patterns; they can be placed along the side of the head, twisted into the hair, worn across the forehead, used as a bun wrap or a hair band.  To be honest I can’t think of any disadvantages for hair vines, to me they’re great.

I hope this has started to help you decide what types of bridal hair accessories are right for you.  If you can think of any advantages or disadvantages to add to the list, leave them as a comment below.

Hair Vines

What are Hair Vines?

Hair vines tend to be created from silver or gold coloured wire with either diamantes, pearls or crystals and occasionally other gemstones or beads.  They are long, thin and usually flexible so they can be bent into shape or weaved into the hair.

When should you choose a bridal hair vine?

There are now so many options when you choose your wedding accessories for your hair, such as tiaras, headbands, combs, pins and grips, so what makes hair vines a perfect choice for some?

Hair vines are very flexible so they can be manipulated into many shapes, therefore they can be incorporated in to wedding hair styles easily.  They’re great if you want to have a more informal feel to your wedding accessories.  If you were opting for crystal or diamante hair vines, you can add sparkle without having to place individual hair pins making it quicker and easier to complete your bridal hairstyle.  Currently brides are opting for a soft romantic curly or wavy hair style for their wedding day and hair vines are a perfect accompaniment for this. They are very popular for those brides who are getting married on a beach in the warm sunshine as often overseas weddings aren’t as formal as UK Church weddings.

How to secure a hair vine

Hair vines that are created with a metal wire base can be pinned into the hair at each end either by using a grip or pin, If it’s long it might need a few additional pins or grips along its length.  The width of the wire should be thin enough to slide into the centre of the hair grip but be thick and rigid enough to hold its shape when bent.

Different length of hair vines and their placements.

Hair vines come in difference lengths. They can be as short as 4 inches like the Calla Lily Hair Vine which are unsuitable for weaving into the hair but perfect for being placed against a French roll or on the side of the hair. There is no limit on the length of a vine, but longer hair vines are more suited for being wound or weaved around the hair or being used as a headband if each end is pinned behind the ear.  A long hair vine can be worn across your forehead in a boho style.  Just thread thin ribbon through the loops at either end and tie at the back.  If you’re unsure how to place a hair vine take a look on the Internet for inspiration.  But make sure you decide on your hair style before buying so you know the right length for you.  Remember if the design you like is only made in short lengths you can always buy 2 to get the length that you need.
